What a fantastic night! On a Thursday evening, April 3, my dear friend Deepali opened up her lovely shop Filling Spaces during Portland’s First Thursday In The Pearl to host a party to celebrate my Kickstarter! And as I am writing this post the Kickstarter project I started fifteen days ago, to format and publish my book EcoHappy: Three Steps Toward An Earth-Friendly Life is 95% funded! And are only at the half-way point, with fifteen more days to go. Amazing! So grateful for the support!

An Evening In The Pearl At Filling Spaces

Let me say, this evening went by too fast! I felt I could have talked to people for another two hours, easily! I had finished editing my Kickstarter video when in San Francisco, so I was able to show it on my laptop. (We also showed my brother-in-law Ryan’s Coolest Kickstarter video – which is drop-dead fantastic.) It was really wonderful to get feedback on the my video and the book.

Prosesco was poured! Cheers!

It was so memorable to talk with Deepali and hear of her visits to India (her sister, who lives in India is her partner in business and works with their family factories that produce the amazing textiles, clothing and furniture in Filling Spaces.) We were all mesmerized by Deepali’s stories of modern Indian dress and how they repurpose old saris, block printing fabrics, factory life in India and her balance of juggling a family and business.

And I got to spend time with my wonderful sister Sue who whipped up the amazing banana cupcakes and passion fruit desserts, party planned with me, and did miracles with my hair! ūüôā ¬†Thank you Sue and Deepali for a great night!

I’m so happy to post the photos from the Kickstarter Party at Perfect Blend Cafe! It was not too long ago, and I’m happy to say the Kickstarter book project is already 75% funded! Get an update here.

Too little cake, too much cake, projector working? Gift bags stuffed, cameras charged and packed, enough colored pencils and paper for kids? I’m not a very calm party planner, but in the end it did turn out… perfect! Thank you to Perfect Blend Cafe and Make Me A Cake Next Door, and I’m so grateful for everyone who came out and let me explain my book project to them. I’m very, very grateful for all the support!

I just returned from a wonderful trip to San Francisco California and Portland Oregon.

My sister has a lovely modern Portland home, with large windows overlooking a wild and mossy backyard. This was my favorite morning – watching the day wake up to a foggy morning, where the mist made everything magical!

I threw a coat over my pajamas, put on my sneakers, and walked into the backyard with my camera! Because if you blink, the fog burns away so quickly and you miss it!

Let me tell you about my most recent visit to my friend Deepali Kalia’s shop¬†Filling Spaces¬†– and invite you to come back to¬†Filling Spaces¬†during the First Thursday Walk in The Pearl tonight, Thursday, April 3 from 6:30 – 8:30pm¬†for an event to celebrate the launch of my¬†Kickstarter Book Project

Here’s what I found in the shop! So many beautiful things made with superb, expert craftsmanship in Filling Spaces Рthe wondrous fabrics, elegant pillows, unique furniture and lighting!  But I’m going to focus on Deepali’s block printed fabric! In the shop are samples of the carved wood blocks used to print the fabrics.

beautiful!

True block printing imparts a unique look to fabric, each block is inked and laid on the fabric, so each impression is different! Look at the character in the print above!

While mass-commercially printed fabrics can imitate hand-block printed fabric, they repeat their design perfectly and never achieve the beautiful variations that true block printing from actual wooden blocks achieves.

When my sister Sue and I stopped into Filling Spaces (after a quick workout nearby Bar Method), we saw Deepali returning from a home consultation with client. Many samples of her elegant block printed fabric had been brought to the consultation, and Deepali returned a carefully curated pile of the selections her client had chosen!

Look at the wonderful colors the fabrics can printed in! The colors are the natural dyes that have been used for generations in India. And if you want a custom color, Deepali can make that happen!

Wouldn’t you want to work in this office, si? In Madrid, Selgas Cano Architects built their work space into¬†the earth.

Selgas-Cano-Office-interior

Look at the view from the inside! If tho were a standard office building, you would peer towards the ground and gaze at what’s happening at the forest floor. But here, the gaze is upward, towards sky and trees. What a joy it must be to tune into the weather and changing seasons – things that happen and change slowly.

Building into the ground also uses the mass of earth to buffer against heat and cold. A well-built (I’ll bet they know all about good waterproofing and drainage!) building like this uses less energy to heat and cool!

My Kickstarter page is up! It’s been such a long road working on this project, I’m pinching myself! I can’t believe I’ve reached the end of this path!

Click the image above to visit my just-posted Kickstarter page and watch the three minute video I put together! (I can’t wait to see what people think about the video!) Or click here:¬†https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1576546752/ecohappy-three-steps-toward-an-earth-friendly-life

Kickstarter is an online crowd-funding platform that helps creative people raise the funds they need to complete their projects. Projects funded can be music albums, films, books, inventions, etc…

My Kickstarter Project is to fund the formatting and printing of my book ¬†EcoHappy: Three Steps Toward An Earth-Friendly Life. It’s a book celebrating “going greener”, illustrated with with my own photography. The book is written and the photographs assembled. This Kickstarter will get the book out into the world, (with your support!)

Check out the Kickstarter, watch the video and SHARE! I’m very hopeful to have this project funded!

…and thank you friends and family for your help, support and patience while I worked on this project! I know it’s consumed a lot of my life lately and hope to take a breath and catch up with everyone! (and make sure laundry and kid’s homework is done!)

Hooray!

Wow! Here’s a look at the design of the cover for my book EcoHappy: Three Steps Toward An Earth-Friendly Life “A Book Of Words And Fine Art Photography Celebrating GOING GREENER”

I can’t tell you how fantastic it feels to see my book start look so “real” – and the Kickstarter Project to publish the book will launch in¬†just nine days¬†on March 20! I almost can’t believe it!

Would you like to sign up to get an email when the project launches, or help out and join my EcoHappy Kickstarter Book Team? I’ve updated a page on this site to do just that: click here!

We sure could use help sharing the project in emails and social media, working with media and press releases, reviewing an excerpt, and need help planning launch parties in Delmar, New York and Portland, Oregon!

What do you think of the book cover? And sign up to get my launch email!
